The first theme I will talking about in relation to the reading and video over sports teams is heroes and role models. Kids really enjoy modeling themselves after someone they look up to whether it be their parents, siblings, upper class-man, etc. An example is in the video Football High when a kid gets an autograph from a player on the high school football team because they looked up to him. What's surprising is how many kids admire athletes that they don't even know and will probably never get the chance to meet either. Heroes in sports are often the athletes with the best jump shot or nastiest curve ball, kids base their whole lives trying to be like their heroes from dressing like them to trying to imitate their game. Kids focus on how the athletes perform rather how the person is as a human being.
The 2nd theme I'll be talking about is the changes in transportation for sports teams. Back in the day there were no planes or charter buses. Everything was played locally or within walking distance. There were no diverse schedules where you play different teams, often you were going to play the same team every time because they were the only teams within range of yours. Nowadays teams travel all over from state to state to play. Some teams even go the extremes of going over seas. None of these teams would be able to get to these places without the increase technology of transportation nowadays. AAU and high school teams use transportation like school buses and the buses get more advanced as you move up the ranks into college ball where charter buses are a factor, just a more luxurious school bus. Til you get to teams such as the pros that make trips from state to state across the country and use team jets to get around. Transportation really made sports more available and beneficial for all types of sports teams.
